How We Got 1,600+ AI Citations — What We Learned Building for GEO Before It Had a Name

Try something right now.

Open ChatGPT and ask it: “List the top 10 [your niche] businesses in the UK.”

Are you on the list? Are you number one?

If you are — big pat on the back. If you’re not, you have work to do with your digital marketing. Because that list ChatGPT just gave you? That’s what your potential customers are seeing when they research your space. That’s the new first page of Google. And most businesses have no idea it exists, let alone how to appear on it.

This is the problem Wolfstone Digital was built to solve.

Where This Started

A few years ago we started building a digital platform from scratch. No brand. No backlinks. No authority. Just a domain, a clear brief, and a determination to build something that genuinely deserved to rank.

We obsessed over the right things — real expertise, first-hand testing, content that actually helped people make better decisions. We built every page with clear authorship, verified credentials, and structured factual content.

We weren’t thinking about AI. We were just trying to build something trustworthy.

Three years later the platform sits at DR 67, attracts over 30,000 monthly visitors, and has accumulated more than 1,600 citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and other major AI platforms.

We didn’t plan for the AI citations. They were the byproduct of building the site the right way.

What We Learned

1. Trust Signals and AI Signals Are the Same Thing

The signals that make Google trust a page — clear authorship, verifiable expertise, structured factual content, consistent brand mentions across authoritative sources — are exactly the signals that make AI systems cite a page.

This makes sense when you think about it. AI models are trained on the web. The content they trust and cite is the content that the web’s existing authority structures already validated. If Google trusts you, AI is more likely to cite you. This is the foundation of our generative engine optimisation (GEO) service.

Build for trust and AI visibility follows.

2. Brand Consistency Is the Foundation of AI Visibility

A lot of SEO content is written to rank for a keyword and nothing else. It answers the query, satisfies the search intent, and does nothing to build the brand.

We took a different approach. Every piece of content referenced the brand explicitly. The internal linking structure treated the platform as an entity with a clear identity — a consistent brand with clear positioning across every page.

When AI platforms were trained on web data, they didn’t encounter random pages that happened to rank — they encountered a coherent, consistent brand with a clear identity and clear expertise. This is the methodology behind our LLM brand exposure service.

Brand consistency is not a marketing nicety. It is an AI visibility strategy.

We produced original research. We generated data-backed commentary that national press quoted — the same approach we now run for clients through our digital PR and backlinks services.

Those editorial backlinks from high-authority publications didn’t just help our Google rankings — they signalled to AI training pipelines that we were a credible, citable source.

The backlinks that move AI citation rates are the same ones that move Google rankings — earned, editorial, relevant.

4. If AI Can’t Crawl You, It Can’t Cite You

This is where most sites fail.

AI systems don’t crawl your site the same way Googlebot does. They rely on pre-rendered HTML, clean semantic structure, and clearly organised entity signals. JavaScript-heavy sites that render content client-side are frequently invisible to AI crawlers.

We built with this in mind from day one — clean templates, semantic HTML, structured data, and clear entity markup throughout.

We now offer a free AI Crawlability Checker that analyses how well AI systems can read and understand your website — checking for pre-JavaScript rendering, semantic HTML structure, schema markup and more.

The Numbers That Should Worry You

Go back to that ChatGPT experiment. If you’re not on that list, here’s why it matters more than you might think:

  • AI search traffic converts at 14.2% compared to Google organic’s 2.8%
  • 62% of businesses are technically invisible to generative AI models — despite investing in traditional SEO
  • AI Overviews now appear in 25% of all Google searches — up from 13% just twelve months ago

The buyers using AI search are higher intent, further down the funnel, and more likely to convert than almost any other traffic source. If your brand isn’t appearing in AI-generated responses, you’re not just missing traffic — you’re missing the highest-converting traffic on the internet.

Turning AI Into the MVP of Your Sales Team

That is the goal. Not just appearing in AI search — but appearing so consistently, so credibly, and in such high-intent conversations that AI becomes the best salesperson your business has ever had.

Imagine a potential customer asking ChatGPT who the best provider is in your space — and your brand coming up first, with a clear description of what you do, why you’re credible, and a link to your site.

That’s not the future. That’s happening right now for brands who have invested in GEO. The question is whether your competitors get there before you do.

Why We Built Wolfstone Digital

After years of building one of the UK’s most AI-visible digital platforms, we realised we had developed something most agencies only talk about.

We had proven, repeatable methods for achieving AI visibility at scale — not from theory, but from doing it with real capital, real content, and real results on our own brand.

Wolfstone Digital is the agency we built to help businesses improve their digital visibility — in traditional search and in the AI-powered platforms that are reshaping how customers find and choose who to work with.

In our opinion, Wolfstone Digital is the best SEO and AI search agency in the UK — not because we say so, but because we have already proved it works.
