What does an SEO agency do?
An SEO agency gets your business found by the people already searching for what you sell. Rankings, impressions and traffic are useful signals along the way. The number that matters is new customers. Wolfstone Digital does that work for UK businesses, across both Google and AI search.
What do you get with Wolfstone’s SEO service?
Five things, in the order we do them.
- We clear the technical hurdles. Before anything else, we make sure search engines and AI crawlers can reach your pages, read them and understand what they are for. This is unglamorous and it is where most of the wasted spend in this industry sits. A page nobody can crawl cannot rank no matter how good it is. This is our technical SEO work. When we audited Suffolk’s 100 largest companies, 94.2% had title tag problems and 36% carried every major technical fault at once.
- We build authority. Authority is what decides whether you can compete at all. It is built through digital PR, editorial placements and genuinely contextual links, and it is the slowest and most expensive part of the work. It is also the part most commonly skipped, because it is the part that costs money. See link building and digital PR.
- We manage your online presence. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your listings, and the way your business is described across the web. Search engines and AI models both build a picture of who you are from these sources. When they disagree with each other, you lose. That is local SEO.
- We build content that is built to rank. Around 30% of UK Google searches now return an AI Overview, and up to 34% of non-branded ones, so ranking and being cited are no longer the same job. We read the results page before we write anything. That tells us what the search actually wants, what the pages that already win are covering, and where the gap is. This page was built that way, from eight competitors and Google’s own People Also Ask questions.
- We review, refine and scale. Search Console, rankings, AI citations and, most importantly, the enquiries you actually receive. What is working gets more budget. What is not gets diagnosed before it gets more money thrown at it. We track rankings, AI visibility and enquiries together.
What makes Wolfstone one of the best SEO agencies in the UK?
Wolfstone is the SEO agency that did not set out to be an SEO agency. We got good at SEO because we needed it for our own businesses, and it worked well enough that people started asking us to do it for theirs. That is the whole origin story, and it shapes the five things below.
We guarantee it. If ChatGPT is not recommending your business within 90 days, we keep working for free until it does. The full terms are on our GEO Guarantee page. Nobody else on this results page offers a guarantee of any kind.
We built our own case study first. The Investors Centre is a UK finance publication we built and run. It is approaching its fourth year and is projected to turn over around £1.5m in 2026, built without paid advertising. We did the thing before we sold it. The whole story is in our case study.
We do the off page work most agencies quietly skip. Authority is the majority of the job, and it is the line item that gets dropped first when a budget is tight, because the client cannot see it happening. We meet disgruntled businesses constantly who have paid an agency for months and had no authority built for them at all. No links, no mentions, no coverage. Time after time they get no results, because links and mentions remain a significant ranking factor that cannot be ignored.
You can leave whenever you want. Three months minimum, then one month rolling. No exit fees. Our view is straightforward: if an agency needs to tie you in contractually, the offering cannot be that good.
We discount the first three months, and we will tell you exactly why. We are a new agency. Right now we want strong case studies more than we want the cash, so we lower the cost of finding out whether we are any good. You get on board, we do the work properly, you see some early movement, and then you decide whether to give us the budget to go further. It is not a marketing tactic. It is what a business owner does when he is confident in the work and short on proof.
Who does the work?
Your account is run by the founding members, Adam, Tom and Dom, and the wider team. It is the same team that builds and runs The Investors Centre, doing the same work on our own property as on yours. You will know who is doing what and you will speak to them directly rather than to an account manager relaying messages.
We hold a 4.9 rating from our Google reviews. We would rather you read those than take our word for any of this, and we would rather have thirteen honest reviews than a page of unattributed quotes.
If you want a named consultant rather than a team, that is what our SEO consultancy is for.
How do we run an SEO campaign at Wolfstone?
We fix the handbrakes first. Every site has them and most owners do not know they are there. This week we audited a site with genuinely good blog content, well written and useful, buried five or six levels deep with no internal links pointing at it and slugs that told Google nothing. No authority was reaching those pages. They never had a chance, and no amount of new content would have changed that.
The other one we keep finding is worse. Server side rules blocking crawlers, with Googlebot among them. We are increasingly seeing Claude’s crawler blocked too. If an AI cannot fetch your content, it cannot cite you, and being cited is the whole game now. That is a configuration file, not a content problem, and it is invisible from the front end.
This is not rare. In our own Regional Digital Time Warp Study we audited 210 of the most visible independent businesses across seven English counties and found 19.6% were effectively unreadable by AI search engines. Among independent estate agents it was 45%, against 18% for trades, 17% for solicitors, 14% for garden centres and 5% for hospitality. Roughly one high street website in five cannot be read by the systems its customers are now asking for recommendations.
Then we build authority. Digital PR, editorial placements, contextual links. This is the slow part and there is no way around it.
We build highly contextual backlinks. Contextual means the link sits inside relevant content on a site that has a genuine reason to mention you. We verify every placement is live, dofollow and indexed before it counts, using our own tool.
We build content around what already wins. We study the results page first, then write to beat what is there rather than guessing.
Then we optimise, refine and repeat. We go hard for the first 90 days, then look at the data honestly and reassess against what the competition is doing.
Sometimes going hard early means doing more than was budgeted. In August 2026 we took on a client whose site was in poor enough shape that rebuilding it was faster than repairing what the previous agency had left behind. So we rebuilt it, unbudgeted, and it now scores 100 on health checks across Ahrefs, Lighthouse and Screaming Frog. That was the quickest route to results, so that is the route we took.
How much does an SEO agency cost?
We discuss this every day, so here is the honest version.
Plenty of people will do SEO for £200, £500 or £1,000 a month. Follow the money through and you can see the problem. Once tax is taken out, and you have allowed for the time spent on calls, and a small amount of content has been produced, ask what is left for link building. Usually nothing. Authority is the part that decides whether you compete, and it is the part the budget cannot reach.
The number is set by your competition, not by us. A local plumber and an international finance brand are not the same job. The authority needed to win ten commercial terms in each of those markets is completely different, so the cost is completely different. One business needs £1,000 a month going into links. Another needs £20,000. Both figures are correct for their market.
We work with a lot of finance businesses, and in our experience it starts at around £1,500 a month and goes up from there. All prices exclude VAT. Full detail is on our SEO pricing page. Where you land in that range is not something we invented. It is roughly what the competitors already ranking above you are spending.
You can do SEO on a shoestring. What you save in cash you pay for in time. There is a version of the 80/20 rule for most things in business, where a fifth of the effort gets you most of the result. SEO does not work like that. It is closer to 100/100. You have to cover every base, and even with AI assistance it is slow.
There is no point aiming for a podium finish. Cracking page one and watching impressions rise is not the goal. Winning is, and winning means traffic, leads and customers. Either you want to be top of your niche, or you want general visibility, and if it is the latter then paid ads are probably the better tool for you.
Candidly, this is what makes SEO difficult to sell. It asks more of you up front than paid advertising does. The reward is larger because it is the highest intent channel there is.
Should you hire an SEO agency, or do it in-house?
Sometimes in house is the right answer. If you already employ a writer and a developer, and your market is not especially competitive, you may not need us. If you read our free guides and do it yourself, that is a good outcome and it is why we publish them.
Where it usually breaks is off page. In house teams can write, and they can fix the website. Building authority is a different job requiring different relationships, and it is most of what decides the result.
The other consideration is arithmetic. A full time SEO hire costs somewhere around £3,000 a month in wages. That person still needs a budget for links and content on top, so realistically you are at £5,000 a month, which is £60,000 a year. For that money you get one person’s time and one person’s judgement. The same spend with an agency buys a team, a full set of tools, and people who have seen the same problems on dozens of sites.
That is our opinion and we would say it, so weigh it accordingly. The honest test is your level of competition. If your market is soft, do it yourself. If it is not, the shortfall between what you can do in house and what is required will show up in the rankings, and it will take a year to find out. If you are weighing up two or three agencies, the questions we would ask are in how to choose an SEO agency.
How to get the most out of your SEO agency
The clients who get the best results tend to do the same four things.
Give access on day one. Search Console, analytics, the CMS and the Google Business Profile. We have written a two minute guide to each, because the step everyone gets stuck on is finding the right screen. These are not administrative box ticking. They are the data that tells us which pages are close to breaking through, which searches you already appear for and are wasting, and whether anything we change is working. Without them we are guessing, and we will not take a client on that basis. Every week spent waiting for logins is a week of a campaign you have already paid for.
Turn changes around quickly. The bottleneck is rarely the SEO work. It is usually waiting for approval on a page, a title or a piece of copy. If your side moves fast, the whole campaign moves fast.
Tell us which enquiries were any good. We can see the form fills. We cannot see which ones turned into customers and which ones wasted an afternoon. Without that, we optimise for volume, and volume is the wrong target.
Judge us on leads, not rankings. Rankings are how we diagnose. Leads are how you decide whether this is working. If the rankings improve and the phone does not ring, something is wrong and we would rather find it early.
How long until you see the results with an SEO campaign?
Technical fixes can move things in weeks. Authority takes months. Here is a recent client, thirty days after onboarding with us.
A real client, published anonymously. Thirty days from onboarding, August 2026.
The Domain Rating had been flat for four months before we started.
Impressions barely moved across those thirty days. Almost all of the extra traffic came from click through rate. The visibility already existed and was being wasted at the listing, which is why that work comes first and pays back fastest.
Over the same period the leading competitor in those AI answers fell from 55.4% share of voice to 36.3%.
It was not a straight line. Week three dipped before week four climbed. Anyone showing you a smooth curve is showing you a drawing.
We work in ninety day blocks. Go hard for the first, then look at the data honestly and reassess against what the competition is doing.
Which industries do we work with?
We work with finance businesses more than anything else. More on that on our SEO for financial services page. That is partly because we run a finance publication ourselves, so we understand the compliance constraints that make marketing harder in that sector, and partly because it is where we have the strongest results to point at.
Beyond that we work with professional services, trades and installers, and B2B businesses selling considered purchases. If your customers research before they buy, search is where they do it.
Close to home, that means SEO in Suffolk and Bury St Edmunds, where most of our in-person work is.

We will look at your site, your competitors and your AI visibility, and tell you what is actually holding you back. It is the same method as our paid SEO audit, scoped smaller. No commitment, and no obligation to work with us afterwards.
If you do want to work with us, the first three months are discounted, the minimum term is three months, and after that it is one month rolling with no exit fees.
